MAL Group Completes Successful Peatland Restoration Projects in Uist

MAL Group, a leading local contractor, has successfully completed two pilot peatland restoration projects in the Stoneybridge and Bayhead catchment areas of Uist. The projects, carried out in collaboration with Scottish Water, are part of a broader initiative to restore approximately 600 hectares of peatland across Scotland.

The restoration work involved reprofiling sharp peat faces, which are often badly eroded and exposed, to return the peatland to a more natural state. This process allows new vegetation to thrive and helps retain water in the land, preventing peat and other organic matter from being washed into the lochs that serve the local water treatment works. Additionally, the restored peatlands play a crucial role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere, contributing to Scottish Water’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

Local crofter John MacLellan, who has grazing land in the Bayhead catchment, praised the work carried out by MAL Group. “The crofters involved with this project think it’s fantastic. The restoration work will bring new vegetation up, making the moorland easier to work with and opening up new grazing lands,” said McClellan.

Jared Stewart, from Scottish Water’s sustainable land management team., highlighted the significance of these projects. “Functioning peatland, once restored to a near-natural state, will start to reverse its carbon loss and capture carbon. After a few years of post-restoration, it will also increase biodiversity and bring a host of other co-benefits,” Stewart explained.

Donald John MacAulay, Operations Director from MAL Group., emphasised the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. “We’re proud to be part of these crucial peatland restoration projects in the North of Scotland. Our goals are closely aligned with those of Scottish Water—working together to promote sustainable land management practices and achieve net zero emissions. We believe in the power of these projects to make a lasting positive impact on the environment and local communities.

The successful completion of these projects by MAL Group marks a significant step towards the broader goal of peatland restoration in Scotland. The company remains committed to supporting sustainable land management practices and contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
