MacAulay Askernish Ltd (MAL) successfully completed the £0.6m coastal protection works on behalf of Highlands & Islands Airports Limited.
Works Commenced January 2015 with completion July 2015.

Project Delivery

The works where located off the northwest coast of Scotland on the Isle of Benbecula. These works are designed to strengthen a portion of the existing Phase 1 works, carry out minor repairs to areas of the defences and prevent the continued erosion of beach material from the western boundary of Benbecula Airport in the Western Isles of Scotland.

The works carried out under this Contract included:-
• Installation of coastal protection consisting of rock armour and concrete.
• Repair of damaged reno mattress, comprising stone refill and lacing on new lids
• Landscaping and replanting of dune areas disturbed during construction of the works.
• Restoration of the coast alignment using excavated material.

Project Management

Due to several high-risk activities on this project, in particular the tidal works, the project required to be well managed to ensure a clear plan was in place to work with the volatile weather
conditions in this exposed location and a day / night shift system was in place to utilise time on site above water.

The works were contracted under NEC3 terms and conditions, MAL carried out the works in the spirit of NEC, ensuring an open & transparent relationship.

Resourceful

MacAulay Askernish Ltd (MAL) provided in-house resources to carry out all works local labour and material, providing rock armour (upto 7t in weight) and smaller rock and gabion stone. All materials where sourced on Island.
