MacAulay Askernish Ltd (MAL) successfully completed the £8.5m Construction of the Ammo Processing Building on behalf of QinetiQ Hebrides, Rangehead, South Uist.
Works Commenced April 2020, with completion on 27th February 2021, this represents an incredible achievement by all at MAL during the 11 month construction period.

SUB-CONTRACTOR MANAGEMENT

The works consisted of the construction of an Ammo Processing Building, located off the northwest coast of Scotland on the QinetiQ MoD site, Rangehead in the Outer Hebrides. This involved the installation of a 20t Gantry Crane, Blast Doors and a Substantial amount of
Mechanical & Electrical equipment.

MAL sub-contracted several different companies covering a wide range of specialties. Early engagement with sub-contractors was a critical element of the project, and more so was the frequent communication with all sub-contractors, ensuring lead times and start on site dates
where met.

Management of our Sub-contractors and communication was another key aspect in the timely and safe completion of the project.
The works were contracted under NEC3 terms and conditions, MAL carried out the works in the spirit of NEC, ensuring an open & transparent relationship.

INNOVATIVE

Due to time constraints, MAL proposed a design change in relation to the Blast Wal Reinforcement. Due to the wall and its foundations being in close proximately to the main building structure, if the wall foundation excavations were left until the main building foundations were complete, it could potentially undermine the structure. MAL proposal to introduce couplers allowed the wall foundations to be cast several months prior to the planned
task, without starter bars projecting above the ground. The position and height of the starter bars in the original design would have also impacted on the frame and cladding trades.

RESOURCEFUL

MacAulay Askernish Ltd (MAL) provided in-house resources to carry out all Civil works, utilising local labour and material. MAL carried out the on-site wet concrete batching of 4000m3 used in the construction of hardstanding’s, Blast Wall, Concrete Roof and Floor Slab. Also supplied was over 15,000 tonnes of infill material for the project. All raw materials with the exception of the cement were sourced on Island.
